In recent years, the poster girl of India women, Smriti Mandhana, stood tall on Sunday (December 24) to guide the Women in Blue to their first win over Australia in Test cricket at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The 27-year-old, who scored 74 in the first innings with the help of 12 fours, remained unbeaten on 38 in the second innings to take her side past the finishing line.

More significantly, how Mandhana finished things off reminded many fans of how MS Dhoni hit the winning runs in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. Incidentally, the venue where Mandhana accomplished the feat is the same.

It was a tossed-up delivery by Jess Jonassen, and Mandhana saw an opportunity to attack the talismanic bowler. The Indian opener came down the track and slammed it straight over the bowler’s end. It was almost a six as the ball landed just before the boundary ropes before crossing it.

Jemimah Rodrigues, who was at the non-strikers’ end, was delighted to see how Mandhana charged down the track and pulled off an exquisite shot. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and head coach Amol Muzumdar were thrilled as well, as they enjoyed India’s first-ever win over the Australian juggernaut in red-ball cricket.
