Hardik Pandya, who made headlines lately by returning to Mumbai Indians for the ucpoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is doubtful to participate in the competition. The star all-rounder had an ankle injury during India’s World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh, and many renowned media outlets, including NDTV, have reported that he may take a longer break in order to stay fit in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Pandya was surprisingly named as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain before the recent mini-auction. He is supposed to succeed Rohit Sharma, under whom the Blue and Gold Brigade saw enormous success over the years in the competition. However, as of now, things are looking bleak for ardent MI fans to see Hardik captain their favourite franchise for an entire edition.

Earlier, there were multiple reports that Pandya would be unavailable till India’s upcoming T20I series in Afghanistan, which will get underway on January 11 and run till January 17. However, considering the T20 World Cup will commence on June 4, potentially little break after the concussion of IPL 2024, the BCCI may urge Hardik not to take any risk before the showpiece event.

Hardik was never a captain in any format at any level before Gujarat Titans decided to give him the skipper’s hat before IPL 2022. He led a formidable side in style, and ended up winning the elusive title in their debut season. They performed admirably in IPL 2023 as well, only to finish as runner-ups, courtesy of Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) starman Ravindra Jadeja’s heroics.
