Shubman Gill has once again silenced his critics with a remarkable performance in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Playing for Punjab, the 26-year-old displayed exceptional resilience and skill, slamming his 14th first-class century against Karnataka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on January 25.
Gill’s return to domestic cricket did not start as expected. In the first innings, Punjab had a rough day as their batting lineup collapsed, managing only 55 runs in 29 overs. Shubman Gill, despite his reputation as a dependable opener, could score just 4 runs off 8 balls. This dismal performance raised questions about his form, especially after his recent outings in the Test series against Australia.
A Heroic Comeback From Shubman Gill
However, the second innings saw a completely different Shubman Gill. Determined to bounce back, Gill anchored Punjab’s innings with a stellar knock. Facing 159 balls, he scored 114 runs, hitting 14 boundaries and 3 sixes. His innings came at a crucial time when Punjab’s batting lineup struggled once again.
Gill was the lone warrior in Punjab’s batting effort, with other batters falling cheaply. Partnering with Mayank Markande for a 63-run stand, Gill showcased his ability to handle pressure and deliver when it mattered the most.
This century was particularly special for Gill, as it marked his first Ranji Trophy century in over five years. His last ton in the tournament was in December 2019 against Vidarbha.
Despite Gill’s brilliance, Punjab found themselves in a tough spot. Karnataka had posted a mammoth 475 runs in their first innings, thanks to a double-century by Smaran Ravichandran. In contrast, Punjab’s first-innings collapse gave Karnataka a 420-run lead. Gill’s century brought some respectability to Punjab’s scoreline, but the team remained under pressure.
