The Indian team is gearing up for a busy year, with the announcement of the Champions Trophy squad, earlier this month. As part of their preparation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new guidelines that make playing domestic cricket mandatory for contracted players, unless there’s a fitness issue. This move comes after India’s Border-Gavaskar loss in Australia earlier this month.

As a result, several star Indian players, including Rohit Sharma, will take part in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, starting from January 23, 2025. Here’s a look at the top India players who will play in the prestigious tournament.

1. Rohit Sharma

India’s Test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, will be making his first appearance in the Ranji Trophy since 2015. He has been named in Mumbai’s 17-player squad for their match against Jammu and Kashmir, set to begin on January 23. Mumbai will be led by Ajinkya Rahane, and they will face Jammu and Kashmir at the MCA-BKC Ground.

Rohit’s recent Test tour of Australia wasn’t his best, scoring just 31 runs in three Tests during India’s 1-3 series defeat.

2. Virat Kohli

Indian superstar Virat Kohli is also making his long-awaited return to the Ranji Trophy after over a decade. He will play his first Ranji match since 2012 for Delhi, against Railways, which will begin on January 30. Kohli couldn’t play in Delhi’s away match against Saurashtra (starting January 23) due to a neck sprain but confirmed his availability for the final league match of the season.

His last Ranji Trophy appearance was in November 2012, when Delhi took on Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad.

3. Rishabh Pant

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is another big name returning to domestic cricket. Pant is part of Delhi’s squad for the match against Saurashtra, starting January 23, marking his return to the tournament after a long break. His last appearance in the Ranji Trophy was in the 2017-18 final against Vidarbha.

4. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been included in Mumbai’s 17-man squad for their upcoming clash against Jammu and Kashmir. The opening batter has been in impressive form, and his inclusion is a great boost for Mumbai as they aim to secure a strong position in the tournament.

5. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is set to make his Ranji Trophy return after a gap of two years. He will represent Punjab in their match against Karnataka, starting January 23. Gill’s last Ranji appearance was in 2022 when he played against Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinals.

The 25-year-old had a tough time in the recent series against Australia, managing only 93 runs in three Tests.

6. Mohammed Siraj

Pacer Mohammed Siraj will represent Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy after being dropped from the Indian squad for the upcoming white-ball series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Siraj, who has been one of India’s standout pacers in recent years, is set to feature in Hyderabad’s Group B match against Vidarbha, starting January 30 in Nagpur.

7. Ravindra Jadeja

Indian star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will represent Saurashtra in Ranji Trophy match against Delhi in Rajkot, starting January 23. He confirmed his availability for the next round of the first-class domestic cricket tournament.
