It seems like India's misery with the red-ball cricket is there to stay for some time. After India's horror show in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, several star players, namely Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma have returned to domestic cricket to test their form. However, they seemed to continue their poor stretch there too.

India's promising young batters, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, failed to deliver in their respective Ranji Trophy matches during the sixth round of the tournament. Gill, representing Punjab against Karnataka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, could muster only 4 runs off 8 balls before being dismissed. It was a disappointing return to the Ranji Trophy for Gill, who was playing his first match in the domestic red-ball format after more than two years.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal, opening for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir, fared no better. The young left-hander managed just 5 off 8 balls before being trapped leg-before by J&K’s leading wicket-taker, Auqib Nabi. The delivery sharply nipped back from a good length, catching Jaiswal on the back foot.

Meanwhile, netizens were quick to express their disappointment over the dismal performances. Many highlighted the growing expectations from these young talents, questioning their ability to adapt to domestic cricket's rigours after their stellar performances in the IPL.  The trolling extended to worries marring fans about the Champions Trophy which is due in a month.

Here's how netizens reacted to the poor performances of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal:

Adding to the disappointment, India captain Rohit Sharma also had a forgettable outing in his much-anticipated return to the Ranji Trophy. Playing for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir, Rohit was dismissed for a mere 3 off 19 balls.

The seasoned campaigner struggled against the pace and movement of J&K bowlers, particularly Umar Nazir, who kept him tied down with a disciplined line and length. Rohit eventually perished while attempting a pull shot, only to miscue it to mid-off.
