In a dramatic turn of events at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, India, who had a promising beginning by winning the toss, faced significant setbacks in the fielding department during Match 5 of the Asia Cup 2023 against Nepal.

IND vs NEP: Shreyas Iyer's drop gave Kushal Bhurtel a lucky break

Shreyas Iyer let go of a crucial chance to dismiss Nepal's opener, Kushal Bhurtel on the final delivery of the game's first over. Bhurtel, seizing an opportunity to strike took a hard swing at a delivery outside off bowled by Mohammed Shami.

The result was a pronounced edge that sped toward the first slip, where Iyer, positioning himself to tale the catch, moved swiftly to his right. Unfortunately for Team India, the ball slipped through his grasp. The tension was evident as both the bowler and the fielder expressed their disappointment at the missed opportunity.

As if this wasn't enough, the very next delivery witnessed another setback for the Men in Blue when Virat Kohli failed to secure a catch, granting a second reprieve to the Nepali team. This time, it was Aasif Sheikh who found himself on the fortunate end of the drop.

Furthermore, Bhurtel got another reprieve when Ishan Kishan dropped a sitter in the fifth over, once again off Shami’s bowling.

Such consecutive missed opportunities, especially in a high-stakes tournament like the Asia Cup, can tilt the balance of the match. India, having already lost a grip on three potential wickets, now faces the challenge of ensuring these slips do not adversely affect the final outcome.

Meanwhile, Shami marked his return to India's playing XI as he filled in the space left by Jasprit Bumrah, who flew back home for the birth of his child. Nepal made one change as well, introducing Bhim Sharki in place of Aarif Sheikh.

While India remains the favourite for many, given their historical performance, Nepal will undoubtedly be eager to capitalize on their newfound luck, hoping to improve upon their previous game against Pakistan. The stakes are high as the winner of this contest will advance to the Super Fours from the group.
