Following the match against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023, discussions about team composition have come to the fore. With KL Rahul expected to return to the side, speculations have intensified about who might make way for him.

Sunil Gavaskar suggests solution to India's selection dilemma

The spotlight is now on Shreyas Iyer after former Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar hinted that the right-hander could be the one to be benched, especially if KL Rahul returns to the side. This comes after Ishan Kishan's phenomenal innings against Pakistan, which has considerably strengthened his position in the squad.

Kishan delivered an exceptional performance, scoring 82 runs from 81 balls when India's top order crumbled. With his innings decorated with nine boundaries and two maximums, he stitched a vital 138-run partnership with Hardik Pandya and steered India out of trouble.

In comparison, Iyer's return to the international circuit was overshadowed as he managed only 14 runs in the same match. While speaking to India Today, Gavaskar conveyed his belief that Iyer's upcoming performance against Nepal would be instrumental in determining his place in the lineup.

The legendary batter opined that if Iyer doesn't shine against Nepal, there might be a reconsideration in the lineup. He reckoned it would be worth considering Rahul and Kishan at the fourth and fifth positions in such a scenario.

"I would actually wait and see what Shreyas Iyer does against Nepal as well. And if he doesn't get runs in the game against Nepal, he might not even get an opportunity to bat. He could probably bat, you know, because against Nepal, if India go for 50 overs, the top three batters could possibly bat 40 odd overs. But otherwise I would look at, you know, in case Shreyas Iyer doesn't get runs, then I would look at both Rahul and Kishan batting at four and five,” said Gavaskar.

The cricketer-turned-commentator further stated that sidelining Kishan, especially after his impressive 80-run innings, would be unfair. According to him, being a left-handed batsman, Kishan brings an essential dynamic to the Indian top order.

“You can't drop him after he got 80. He's got an 80 in trying circumstances. I don't think you can drop him. It's not fair to him. And he, like I said, he brings a left-handed dimension to the Indian top order,” added the Indian veteran.
