West Indies captain Shai Hope failed to lead his side to recovery against Australia in the first ODI of their three-match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Batting at number four and arriving to the crease in just the fifth over of the innings, the 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter made an attempt to take on Australian debutant Xavier Bartlett with an ambitious drive, only to hand Matthew Short an easy catch at slips.

Hope’s dismissal further worsened West Indies troubles as they slipped to 37-3 by the end of their first 10 overs in their series opener.

Bartlett dashes WI hopes by removing Hope

Shai Hope went hard at Australian pacer, Xavier Bartlett, in an attempt to break the shackles towards the end of the opening powerplay. While the senior West Indies batter threw his hands at Bartlett’s fullish wide delivery, he only managed to connect the toe end of the bat to hand Matthew Short some catching practice at slips.

Earlier in the day, Xavier Bartlett also accounted for the wickets of both West Indies openers with the new-ball. The speedster cleaned up Justin Greaves in his first over of international cricket, and also had Alick Athanaze caught behind the following over.

Overall, Bartlett concluded his maiden assignment with the ball by collecting four West Indies wickets at the expense of just 17 runs from nine overs. Recovering from their top-order jitters, the visitors managed to extend their total to a competitive 231 off the back of Keacy Carty’s fighting 88 and Roston Chase’s rebellious 59.

Apart from debutant Bartlett, senior members Sean Abbott, Cameron Green and spinner Adam Zampa also chipped in with key wickets throughout the West Indies innings.
