Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali combined to help Pakistan scalp their maiden wicket in the World Cup 2023 on Friday, against the Netherlands at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. Hasan bowled four dots in a row before taking the wicket, and it was Max O’Dowd who became his victim.

It was a short delivery from Hasan clocked at 130 kph, which Max O’Dowd tried to hook. However, the Dutch opener did not get his timing right, and as a result, the ball went straight to the safe hands of Shaheen Afridi at deep fine leg.

Pakistan players were delighted to see Hasan draw first blood for them, particularly because he got the opportunity in place of the injured Naseem Shah.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan closed on 286 in 49 overs, with Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel making 68 runs each. They were down and out at one point, having lost Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Imam-ul-Haq inside the first ten overs before Rizwan and Shakeel steadied the ship and took them to a respectable total.

At the time of writing, the Netherlands are on 40/1 in nine overs, with Vikramjit Singh going strong on 23* off 30 deliveries.
