The World Cup 2023 is up and running, and ahead of the 4th match of the competition between Sri Lanka and South Africa, the Lankans have been handed a big blow as their star spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out. He has failed to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered during the recently held Asia Cup 2023, as confirmed by the head coach, Chris Silverwood.

Theekshana’s participation in the World Cup was always in doubt after he missed the Asia Cup final, but he was named in the squad, and there were hopes that he would be available for all Lankan games.

Sri Lanka are already without their star, Wanindu Hasaranga who is also nursing an injury and Sri Lanka would have to show lot of character and skills if they want to do well in this World Cup. However, despite missing key players in the Asia Cup as well, Sri Lanka did pretty well to reach the final of the Asia Cup and under Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka have done quite well in big tournaments in recent years.

Sri Lanka have won the World Cup just one time, back in 1996 unde the inspired leadership of Arjun Ranatunga. That World Cup was also held in Indian subcontinent and no one actually gave Sri Lanka a chance leading into that World Cup, something that is the case in this World Cup as well. It would be interesting to see how Lankan Lions go about their business in what is expected to be a cracking World Cup in India.
