In the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024, Sanju Samson's struggle to assert himself in red-ball cricket continued as he departed in a crucial phase of the match. The wicketkeeper-batter's innings ended prematurely during the second innings against India A at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur.

Sanju Samson, who has been striving to make a mark in the longer format, faced another setback in this match. His first innings saw him contribute just 5 runs before being dismissed. In the second innings, although he managed to stay longer at the crease, his innings was cut short after lunch on the second day, scoring 40 runs.

The defining moment came in the 61st over of the India D innings. Sanju Samson, along with partner Ricky Bhui, was in pursuit of a challenging target when Shams Mulani struck with a stunning delivery.

Shams Mulani, who had been exceptional throughout the day, delivered a ball that removed the star batter. The delivery was pitched on a good length, on off-stump, and turned away sharply. It was perfectly executed, kissing Samson’s edge and finding its way into the gloves of keeper Kumar Kushagra.

This dismissal was a significant blow for India D, following Mulani’s earlier removal of captain Shreyas Iyer, who had made 41 runs.

India D Struggling Against India A

India A set a challenging target by scoring 290 runs in their first innings, thanks to half-centuries from Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian. India D struggled in response, collapsing for just 183 runs, with Khaleel Ahmed and Aaqib Khan each claiming three wickets. In their second innings, India D fought back, declaring at 380/3, bolstered by a century partnership between Tilak Varma and Pratham Singh.

On Day 4, India D began the day at 62/1, with Ricky Bhui and Yash Dubey forming a solid 100-run partnership. However, Dubey was run out for 37, and Shams Mulani further undermined India D’s position by dismissing Devdutt Padikkal and Shreyas Iyer.

Currently, India D are in a precarious situation at 238-6, needing 250 more runs to secure victory.
