India’s current head coach Gautam Gambhir has always been known for his fiery passion and unapologetic demeanour. His leadership style contrasts his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, who was known for his calm and composed approach.

Gambhir's cricketing career mirrored his bold nature, often marked by intense moments and a will to win at all costs. His passion and aggression were crucial in India's 2007 ICC World T20 and the 2011 ODI World Cup victories. However, this same intensity sometimes led to fierce competition, even with his teammates.

Aakash Chopra Opens Up: ‘We Were Competitors’

Aakash Chopra, Gambhir's former teammate and now a renowned commentator, recently revealed his fierce rivalry with Gambhir during their playing days. In a podcast with Raj Shamani on YouTube, Chopra acknowledged that their early relationship wasn’t built on friendship but competition. Both players vied for the same spot in a highly competitive Delhi team, where only the best could secure a place in the playing XI.

According to Chopra, even star players like Virender Sehwag were moved down to accommodate the likes of Shikhar Dhawan or Virat Kohli.

"We are competitors because we were fighting for one place. Our team was very good. When we were playing, only one of Kohli and Dhawan got the chance to play. The team was like that. In fact, there was no place for even Viru to open the batting. Viru batted four so that we can accommodate one of Shikhar and Virat at 3," Chopra recalled.

He further admitted, "We were competitors to begin with. He wasn't a friend, to be honest. (But he was a) very passionate guy, very hard working, and very serious about his craft. And he scored a lot of runs. But he always wore his heart on the sleeve, was extremely passionate, and could short-fuse very quickly in terms of temperament."

Chopra also delved into Gautam Gambhir's background, highlighting that despite coming from a wealthy family, Gambhir was fiercely dedicated to the game. Cricket wasn’t necessary for financial reasons, but Gambhir’s relentless work ethic and drive were evident.

"He didn’t need cricket for the money, but he was at the ground all day. That kind of passion is rare," Chopra reflected.
