Indian captain Rohit Sharma lost his cool at young bowler Harshit Rana during the second ODI between India and England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9. The incident happened in the 32nd over of England’s innings when Harshit Rana made an unnecessary throw that gifted England four extra runs.
England started off well with an 81-run partnership between Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. However, India got their first breakthrough when Varun Chakravarthy, playing his debut ODI match, dismissed Salt. Soon after, Ben Duckett, who played a fine knock of 65 runs off 56 balls, was also sent back to the pavilion.
Harshit Rana then struck by dismissing Harry Brook for 31 runs, briefly halting England’s momentum. Despite this, Joe Root and Jos Buttler worked to rebuild the innings and set up a big total.
Harshit Rana’s Costly Mistake
The real drama unfolded in the 32nd over. Harshit Rana bowled a good-length delivery at 138 kmph, which Buttler defended straight back to him. Instead of holding onto the ball, Rana picked it up and threw it at the stumps despite Buttler being safely inside the crease. The ball missed the target and raced away to the boundary, adding four free runs to England’s total.
Rohit Sharma was visibly furious and was caught on camera animatedly scolding Harshit Rana for his reckless mistake.
England Looking To Post Big Total
England, after opting to bat first, looked solid with key contributions from their batters. Harshit Rana had bowled seven overs by then, conceding 41 runs and taking one wicket. At the time of writing, England are at 208 runs for 3 runs, aiming for a big total.
