England have suffered a major setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Young all-rounder Jacob Bethell has picked up a hamstring injury just days before the big tournament. This injury has also ruled him out of the second ODI in the ongoing three-match series against India, putting his Champions Trophy participation in doubt.

Tom Banton Called Up As Cover

To cope with Bethell’s absence, England have called up Tom Banton for the third ODI against India. Banton, who last played an ODI for England in August 2020, has been in outstanding form in T20 franchise cricket. He is currently the leading run-scorer in the UAE ILT20 competition, with 493 runs from 11 innings at an impressive average of 54.77, including two centuries.

Banton will join the England squad on Monday, and his inclusion provides England with an additional batting option as they finalise preparations for the Champions Trophy.

Jacob Bethell sustained a left hamstring injury during England’s first ODI against India, where he played a crucial knock of 51 runs batting at No. 6. His injury will be further assessed when the team arrives in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Meanwhile, England have also made other squad adjustments. Fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse are being rested, while wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith remains unavailable.
