Rohit Sharma survived an early scare against England on Day 4 during India’s fourth innings run-chase at Hyderabad. The Indian captain took first guard at the crease for his side in the afternoon session of the day, in an attempt to chase down 231 runs and take a 1-0 lead in their five-match series.

After getting off the mark against Joe Root in the first over of the innings, Sharma survived an outside edge off Mark Wood in the following over as the ball zipped past second slip Zak Crawley for a boundary.

Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma received an early reprieve by English fielder Zak Crawley stationed at second slip. Crawley failed to get his hands on the ball after teammate Mark Wood had induced a healthy outside edge off Sharma in just the second over of the Indian run-chase.

To make matters worse for the visitors, the ball raced towards the deep-third boundary as Sharma received an early impetus in the innings.

After Rohit Sharma’s lucky escape, the Englishmen fought back strongly to snap up two key Indian wickets in quick succession a while later. Visiting spinner and debutant Tom Hartley defeated Sharma’s opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal as well as India’s number three Shubman Gill in a space of just three deliveries as hosts slumped to 42-2 by the end of their 12 overs.

Earlier in the day, England amounted to 420 in their second innings off the back of a splendid 196 by Ollie Pope. Ben Foakes, Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley also added crucial runs in the backend to set Team India a competitive 231-run target at Hyderabad.
