In an unusual twist during the first ODI of the five-match series between South Africa and Australia at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, a communication breakdown led to the dismissal of Rassie van der Dussen.

Van der Dussen paid the price for Bavuma's error in judgement

During the final ball of the 12th over bowled by Australian pacer Sean Abbott, van der Dussen placed a full-length ball towards mid-off and hastily took off for a run. Much to his dismay, his non-striker partner, Temba Bavuma was not in sync and remained unmoved, engrossed in observing the ball.

With van der Dussen almost at the other end, a sudden 'no' from Bavuma prompted a hurried retreat. Despite a desperate dive, van der Dussen was unable to make his ground and had to depart for a painstaking 8 runs off 16 balls.

The gravity of the misjudgment weighed heavily on both batsmen, as evident from their avoidant glances and the evident disappointment. This gaffe further intensified the pressure on South Africa's innings after an already shaky start.

Earlier in the match, after winning the toss, Australia's skipper chose to bowl first, a decision that seemed fruitful as South Africa's top order wobbled. Quinton de Kock returned to the pavillion early, adding only 11 runs to the total. He fell prey to Marcus Stoinis' bowling in the ninth over.

Following de Kock's exit, the spotlight was on van der Dussen, whose untimely run-out marked South Africa's second loss. The third setback came with Aiden Markram's departure for 19 runs, with Cameron Green claiming his wicket.

As the match progressed, at the 24-over mark, South Africa's scorecard read 94/3. All eyes are on captain Bavuma, who is batting on 40 runs off 68 balls. Alongside him is Henrich Klaasen, holding firm at 13 runs off 16 balls.

Their budding partnership offers a glimmer of hope for South Africa, as they aim for a competitive total against a strong Australian bowling lineup. The remainder of the innings is crucial, with the hosts pinning their hopes on the pair to steer them to a respectable score in the series opener.
