'Suryakumar Not Clear In His Head…': Ex-India Coach After His World Cup 2023 Call-up

Suryakumar Yadav found a seat among India’s 15-player World Cup 2023 line-up, despite his poor run of form in ODIs off late. Currently the number one ranked batsman in T20Is, the cricketer is yet to set the ODI stage ablaze with his batting.

Former India coach Sanjay Bangar believes that Yadav still has what it takes to spark a turnaround in ODIs just in time for the 2023 World Cup later this year.

Bangar says Suryakumar Yadav a versatile player

Despite featuring in 26 ODIs for India since his debut, Suryakumar Yadav averages only 24.33 in the format. Earlier this year, the cricketer returned with three successive first-ball ducks in a home series against Australia, and failed to make much impact in India’s three ODI matches in West Indies last month.

Sanjay Bangar recently claimed that Yadav can overcome his ODI struggles by learning how to score in the middle stages of the innings. The former all-rounder praised the T20I veteran by describing him a “versatile player”, one who just needs to clear his head about how to rotate strike between the 25th and the 40th over.

Commentating on Star Sports for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, Bangar said:

“Suryakumar Yadav has a very good idea of where to hit boundaries, but if there is one thing he needs to do, it is to find out how to bat between the 25th and the 40th over. I don’t think he is clear in his head and heart about how to score runs in this period.

He can play like he does in the T20 format, but if wickets fall, he needs to find out how to rotate strike between the 25th and the 40th over, and he needs to find his own method to score runs here which he is obviously thinking about.”

Yadav was dropped from India’s playing XI for their Asia Cup 2023 opener against arch-rivals Pakistan.

It remains to be seen whether the 32-year-old will get some match-time this tournament, considering the Indian team is already injected with the return of middle-order stalwart Shreyas Iyer.
