Nicholas Pooran is one of the most fearsome batters in world cricket and whenever he gets going, it is pretty hard to stop him. He was expected to blast away in the T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Papua New Guinea, but Pooran could manage only 27 off 27 balls and ended up throwing his wicket away in the 9th over.

The southpaw walked out to bat at number 3 with Johnson Charles departing for a golden duck. Papua New Guinea batted first and set a target of 137, and Pooran struggled to get going initially. He did find his touch later in his knock, but John Kariko got the better of him on the first delivery of the 9th over.

Pooran's wicket was an important one for Papua New Guinea and West Indies were put in a lot of pressure after his wicket as the likes of Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford departed in quick succession. Earlier, West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first and after a disciplined bowling performance, managed to restrict Papua New Guinea to 136.
