On Wednesday, May 8, Papua New Guinea (PNG) announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 that is slated to be co-hosted by West Indies and the USA.

Led by Assad Vala, PNG will feature in Group C alongside West Indies, Uganda, Afghanistan, and New Zealand.

Papua New Guinea earned their spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 after an unbeaten qualifying campaign in the East Asia-Pacific regional final. 

With victories over Japan, Vanuatu, and the Philippines, the Barramundis dominated their region and solidified their position as one of the top emerging cricketing nations.

In the tournament, PNG will face hosts West Indies in their opening match on June 2, followed by a clash with Uganda on June 5. They will also meet Afghanistan and finish their group stage against East Asia-Pacific rivals New Zealand.

With a balanced squad, PNG will aim to secure their first-ever T20 World Cup victory and advance to the knockout stages.

Assadollah Vala, the captain of the Papua New Guinea team, will continue to lead the Barramundis in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Known for his reliable all-round performance, Vala is an experienced campaigner who led PNG in their previous T20 World Cup appearance and has been instrumental in guiding the team through the regional qualifiers.

He is a vastly experienced captain, having led PNG in 54 T20Is, winning 31, losing 21, and one no result. Vala will look to lead PNG with confidence and create an impact on the tournament.

Former Zimbabwean cricketer and wicket-keeper-batter, Tatenda Taibu is the head coach of the Papua New Guinea cricket team.

Taibu captained Zimbabwe before retiring at the age of 29 in 2012. His coaching career includes development roles in England and Zimbabwe before taking over as PNG's head coach.

He succeeded former Australian international Nathan Reardon, who remains part of the coaching setup as an assistant coach.
