Papua New Guinea have started their second T20 World Cup campaign following their unsuccessful 2021 attempt. PNG faced West Indies in the first group game of T20 World Cup 2024.

Known as the Barramundis, they lost all three group games in the 2021 tournament. They start their 2024 campaign in the hope to better their 2021 campaign.

Papua New Guinea qualified for the T20 World Cup 2024 through the East Asia Pacific Qualifier in July 2023, winning all six matches in the double round-robin format against Japan, Vanuatu, and the Philippines.

Entering the qualifiers as heavy favorites, the Barramundis secured the sole qualifying spot from the region.

For such a small country, playing on this stage against top teams is a significant achievement.

PNG Challenge WI in a tight game

Papua New Guinea challenged the West Indies in their first game of the T20 World Cup 2024. Batting first, Papua New Guinea posted 136-8 in 20 overs.

Chasing 137, at one point, the West Indies struggled in their chase at 97-5, but the heroics of Andre Russell and Roston Chase helped them reach the target in 19 overs.
