Indian captain Rohit Sharma seemingly scored his first set of runs in his series against Afghanistan off the very first ball of the third and final T20I in Bengaluru. While the cricketer glanced Afghanistan speedster Fareed Ahmad down the leg side for a boundary, the square-leg umpire ended up signaling it leg-byes.

A visibly animated Sharma subsequently had a brief argument with the umpire, which even incited a laugh riot among the on-air commentators at the time.

Desperate for runs, Rohit Sharma argues with umpire

Rohit Sharma, making his return to India’s T20I setup after a gap of 14 months through the ongoing series against Afghanistan, was dismissed for ducks in the first two games. Desperate for some runs, the dashing opening batsman glanced Afghanistan’s new-ball speedster Fareed Ahmad off the very first ball of his innings, only for the square-leg umpire Virender Sharma to declare it leg-byes instead.

Sharma subsequently had an animated conversation with the umpire, where he confirmed to the official that he had indeed made some contact with the bat. The Indian skipper can be heard via stump-mic saying:

“Thigh pad diya kya pehla ball? Itna bada bat diya mene.” (Did you declare it leg-byes for the thigh pad? I made a contact with the bat.)

Rohit Sharma eventually got his first runs of the series the following over when he took a single off Azmatullah Omarzai. He even belted the two Afghanistan speedsters for a boundary each within the opening powerplay, as the cricketer stood tall for India around tumbling wickets in the first six overs.

Under his leadership, the Indian team outclassed Afghanistan with emphatic margins in the first two T20Is to seal their three-match series with a game to spare.
