In the ongoing ninth match of CPL 2024 St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots struggled to live up to expectations on a high-scoring ground, and managed to post 153/8 in their 20 overs against the Barbados Royals.

Patriots' Openers Failed To Perform

After winning the toss, Royals' captain Rovman Powell put the Patriots in to bat first, and it turned out to be a nightmare start for the home side. Maheesh Theekshana struck in the first over and dismissed both Evin Lewis and Kyle Mayers for silver ducks.

The situation worsened in the second over when Dunith Wellalage removed captain Andre Fletcher, also for a silver duck, which left the Patriots in disarray at 0/3.

However, Wanindu Hasaranga scored 40 runs off 27 well supported by Mikyle Louis who scored 30 off 20 to stabilise the innings. Late cameos from Josh Clarkson and Ryan John helped the Patriots reach a somewhat competitive total of 153/8, which gave them a fighting chance against the Royals.

Obed McCoy Provides Much- Needed Breakthrough

Wanindu Hasaranga played a crucial knock after their disastrous start. In the 10th over of the first innings, he was dismissed by Obed McCoy with a game-changing blow. McCoy's slower ball proved too deceptive for Hasaranga.

It was a fuller delivery, angled around middle and leg, and Hasaranga tried to make room on the leg side to hit it downtown. Unfortunately, he misjudged the line, and the ball crashed into the stumps. His departure left the Patriots struggling once again, as no other player could step up with a significant contribution after his dismissal.

At the end of the match, chasing a modest target, Royals opener Cornwall failed to perform and with him, Quinton de Kock started well but was not able to score big. Later on, with significant contributions from Dunith Wellalage, Jason Holder and Nyeem Young Barbados Royals won the match by 2 wickets.
