In the latest development coming in from England cricket, Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of 2024 due to a 'bone stress injury' on his right elbow. On September 6, 2024, the England and Wales Cricket Board released a statement in which they updated about this injury.

Big Blow For England Cricket

Mark Wood's injury will be a major setback for England, especially considering his importance in their pace attack. His ability to generate extreme pace has been vital for England, which was witnessed in the Test series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

It is important to note that, Mark Wood played through pain during the West Indies series and then suffered a separate right thigh injury during the Sri Lanka series which added to the concern regarding his overall fitness.

In the report stated by ECB, it was mentioned that his thigh injury is reportedly being managed well. However, his elbow issue has worsened and needs proper treatment and rehabilitation.

"Medical scans have confirmed that Wood has a bone stress injury of the right elbow injury. He had noticed increasing stiffness and discomfort in his elbow during the Test series against the West Indies earlier in the summer. He played a full part in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford managing the discomfort whilst he was bowling," the ECB wrote.

Wood missed the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Lord's and Olly Stone, right-arm fast bowler, was named as his replacement.

His absence will likely have a big impact, especially in the upcoming series against competitive teams later this year.

Mark Wood To Work On His Workload Management And Rehabilitation

Wood's career has been marred by frequent injuries and he will continue working closely with the ECB medical team for rehabilitation and injury management.

As a result of his condition, Wood will miss England’s upcoming three-Test series in Pakistan in October and the tour to New Zealand in December.

In the reports, the ECB also stated about Wood's recovery timeline. They mentioned that he aims to regain full fitness by early 2025. This would position him to be available for England's white-ball tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, set to begin in February 2025.
