In a stunning display of precise fast bowling, South African pacer Marco Jansen forced an edge off Pathum Nissanka as Tristan Stubbs latched a comfortable catch at third slip to send the batter back. In what turned out to be an absolutely dominant show, Jansen bagged a five-wicket-haul in just 6 overs.
In the first Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa, the latter batted first and were bundled for 191/10 as Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando picked 3 wickets each to derail the hosts. However, with the conditions favourable for bowling, the hosts were poised to fight back.
Kagiso Rabada drew first blood to induce a healthy outside edge from Karunaratne. Marco Jansen followed next with an extraordinary spell.
Marco Jansen dismantles Sri Lankan lineup
In his first wicket of the day, Jansen, who was signed by Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 mega auction, bowled a fuller delivery to Pathum Nissanka outside the off-stump line. Late seam movement deceived the batter as he nicked an outside edge that went straight to Tristan Stubbs at third slip. Nissanka had to walk back as Sri Lanka were reduced to 7/2 in just 3.2 overs.
That being said, Pathum Nissanka’s wicket was the beginning of Marco Jansen’s carnage. His precise seam bowling with tight lengths knocked over Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Matthews, and Dhanajaya.
Jansen clinches five-wicket-haul in 6 overs
In his just first 6 six overs spell, Marco Jansen completed a five-wicket-haul. He finished the innings with 7 wickets for 13 runs which is the second best figures in South Africa-Sri Lanka Test series history. Not only that, Jansen’s 7/13 is third best bowling figure by a South African fast bowler at home.
Owing to the hosts’ unreal carnage with the ball, Sri Lanka were bundled for just 42/10. The Proteas, with a 149 runs lead, walked out to bat in the third innings with a significant advantage and control in hand over the first Test of the 3-game series.
