In a heartwarming display of deceptive spin bowling, Mumbai Indians' Saika Ishaque cleaned up Delhi Capitals dangerous batter Marizanne Kapp in the death to save her team a few runs to chase.
For the inaugural match of the WPL 2024 season's Delhi leg, Mumbai Indians Women squared off with Delhi Capitals Women at the Arun Jaitley stadium earlier today. Harmanpreet Kaur and Shabnim Ismail returned to the squad after recovering from respective niggles.
Meanwhile, DC-W optimized the home advantage, and openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning unleashed fury with the bat. After Lanning departed with a half-century, Marizanne Kapp took over to continue the momentum. Kapp has been in sublime form this WPL season and has been a key figure contributing to DC's success.
However, this time, the all-rounder couldn't create magic for her side. In the 18th over, Kapp decided to shift gears to guide her side to a formidable total.
MI-W took a bold call to introduce Saika Ishaque for the 18th over. But Saika lived up to her captain's faith. She trusted her instincts and bowled a simple fuller delivery onto the stumps.
Kapp was caught in two minds as she dropped on the backfoot for a cut. But the South African all-rounder failed to get her bat down in time and was beaten from all fronts.
The ball slammed into the roots of the stumps, and bails lit up to end Kapp's short stay at the crease.
On the other hand, Saika Ishaque was ecstatic with the wicket. She knew Kapp's capability of causing destruction in the end. And with her early dismissal, Saika managed to save 10-15 runs for her side.
However, despite the spinner's salient efforts, Jemimah Rodriguez stole the momentum with a heroic effort in the end. MI-W has 192 runs on the board to chase and grab two points.
