In a thrilling 38th match of World Cup 2023 encounter, Bangladesh's skipper Shakib Al Hasan found himself at the center of a dramatic dismissal orchestrated by Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews.

The turning point of this intense encounter occurred when Angelo Mathews, poised to face the first ball, noticed a problem with his helmet. Mathews signaled to the dressing room for a replacement, but crucially, time was running out. Shakib Al Hasan had previously made an appeal that was upheld by the on-field umpire, setting the stage for a contentious decision.

The delay in Mathews' equipment change, combined with Shakib's appeal, resulted in a rare timed-out decision against Mathews. As the 12th man hurriedly brought a replacement helmet, Mathews was left with no choice but to depart the field and return to the pavilion, much to the astonishment of Sri Lankan supporters.

However, the drama didn't stop there. Later in the match, Angelo Mathews exacted sweet revenge by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan, who had been in sublime form with 82 runs to his name.

In the 32nd over of the game, Mathews returned to the attack and removed Shakib on the very first delivery. Shakib's attempt to close his bat-face early led to a leading edge that spiraled into the air. Asalanka, positioned at shortish extra cover, dove to take a stunning catch.

The dismissal was further flavored by a light-hearted send-off from Mathews, who pointed at his wrist, suggesting that time had run out for Shakib.

At the time of writing, Bangladesh was at 211 for 3 in 34 overs.
