Australia and Afghanistan face off for supremacy in what promises to be a heated and riveting ICC World Cup 2023 league stage clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (November 7).

The promising rivalry in its infant stage has picked up steam since Australia's much-documented refusal to continue bilateral cricketing relationship with the war-torn country, with the Afghanistan players carrying angst and frustration about the decision.

Afghan seamer Naveen-Ul-Haq recently re-sparked the debate on Cricket Australia's (CA) move with an Instagram post, asking if Australia would deny playing them even with the World Cup semifinal spot at stake considering their morale high ground against Taliban's extremist and misogynist regime.

With players and Afghanistan's cricket board helpless in a scenario entailing social hurdles in the country for women to enjoy basic human rights like playing sports and availing education, several cricketers, including Big Bash League (BBL) star Rashid Khan, had threatened to pull out of Australia's premier T20 league last year, revealing their frustration at Australia cancelling a planned ODI series.

Australia vs Afghanistan Head-to-Head Record in ODIs

With almost negligible bilateral assignments between the two nations, Australia and Afghanistan have only thrice played each other in One-Day Internationals.

Since the two nations' maiden on-field 50-over clash back in 2012 in Sharjah, Australia have played Afghanistan only two other times at the 2015 and 2019 editions of the World Cup, underlining top full member's elitist outlook when it comes to helping the game's lower-ranked and associate forces.

Given the huge gap in experience, the Afghans haven't quite managed to withstand the Australian challenge in the two previous editions of the World Cup. The Aussies had dominated their Asian rivals in Perth during the 2015 campaign and suppressed their threat in Bristol at the 2019 event.

The acute lack of multi-national tournaments outside the major ICC events means the upcoming Australia-Afghanistan clash will be the first time that the two countries meet in the One-Day Internationals on Indian shores.
