Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi witnessed a historic moment on Monday (November 6) during Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh. A batsman was 'timed out' for the first time in the history of the game, and it was Angelo Mathews who became the victim.

There is a rule that a batsman must enter the field within two minutes of the previous dismissal, and take a maximum of three minutes before facing a delivery. However, it did not happen, as Angelo Mathews took too much time after Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal.

Mathews was not too happy with his helmet, and thus, he wanted to change it before taking the guard.

Shakib Al Hasan appealed straightaway for the delay after three minutes were passed, and on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth had no option but to give him out.

Mathews was frustrated about the whole incident, as he was giving excuses for his helmet settings. He even went to Shakib to withdraw his appeal, but the Bangladesh captain did not do that, and therefore, the Sri Lankan all-rounder had to leave the field without facing any delivery.

Unsurprisingly, things got heated up in Delhi as soon as it happened. As of writing, Sri Lanka are 158/5 after 29 overs.
