Martin Guptill, a former New Zealand batter, created history at the Nepal Premier League 2024 season’s opening game between Janakpur Bolts and Biratnagar Kings. Taking on Ben Mike in the first innings, Guptill hit straight down the ground over the bowler’s head to record the first six in NPL history.
Nepal Premier League debuted with its inaugural season earlier today, November 30 at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Janakpur Bolts were up against Biratnagar Kings with the former opting to bowl first after winning the toss.
For the Kings, Lokesh Bahadur and New Zealand veteran batter Martin Guptill opened the innings. Guptill stamped his seniority with a big maximum in the 13th over.
Martin Guptill etches NPL history with a maximum
Up against Ben Mike, Martin Guptill connected a fuller delivery outside the off-stump line for a lofted hit over the long-off boundary. The ball travelled over the bowler’s head to cross the ropes as Biratnagar Kings were awarded with 6 additional runs. Meanwhile, Guptill’s hit was recorded as the maiden six in NPL history.
Not only that, the Kiwi veteran went on to script another milestone by becoming the first batter to slam a fifty in NPL history. With 7 fours and a maximum, Guptill slammed 55 runs off 43 balls with a 127.91 strike rate.
Owing to his stable start, Biratnagar Kings finished with a respectable total of 127/10. However, the total wasn’t good enough as Bolts chased it down in 15.3 overs. Lahiru Milantha hammered 75 off 53 balls to lead his team to a convincing one-sided victory.
