In a concerning health update, India’s senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami injured his lower back during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 edition. Featuring in the Bengal vs Madhya Pradesh contest, Shami pulled his lower back while trying to stop a ball with his foot.

Mohammed Shami and his hate relationship with injuries is unlikely to come to an end soon. After sustaining a heel injury that kept him out for 8 months, the pacer suffered knee injury which ruled him out from the first half of the Border-Gavaskar Series.

While Shami was cleared to bowl in domestic cricket by the BCCI medical team, he is nowhere close to being ready to face the rigours of red-ball cricket. To add to the misery, Shami faced yet another niggler during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Shami ruled out for Australia Test series?

According to Inside Sports, Mohammed Shami pulled his lower back and was down to the ground in extreme pain. BCCI Centre of Excellence median team head Nitin Patel rushed to assist him. So far, no injury diagnosis update has been shared by the board, which suggests the pacer has avoided serious mishap.

But one way or the other, Mohammed Shami’s Test comeback dream appears more or less over. BCCI’s hesitation to not include him in the Australia-bound squad is proving right as the fast bowler struggles to even bowl a 4-over spell.

For now, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Yash Dayal will comprise the pace attack for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar tour.

Bumrah still hopeful of Shami’s comeback

India’s stand-in captain, Jasprit Bumrah, addressed Mohammed Shami’s injury crisis after the first Test victory in Perth. He revealed that India’s bowling combination is set with Rana, him, and Siraj leading the charge. However, Shami has always been a key element of India’s red ball format success, and hence, the team management has a close eye on him. In an ideal world, Shami could be seen in Australia if his recovery stays on track.
