The Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 season went underway today with a high-scoring cracker between Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars at The Gabba. Heat opener and New Zealand import Colin Munro lit up the occasion with a sizzling 61-ball 99*, and his knock hurled up his side towards a colossal 214-3 upfront.
Remarkably, the high-scoring innings also featured a handy middle-overs anchoring effort from Marnus Labuschagne, and a valiant catch from his Australian teammate and Stars all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.
Marcus Stoinis grabs a stunner at The Gabba
Brisbane Heat opener Colin Munro tonked nine boundaries and five sixes in his 61-ball 99-run hurricane. The Kiwi star bludgeoned a 66-run stand at the top with Usman Khawaja before sharing another 82 runs with number three Marnus Labuschagne.
Labuschagne himself anchored the middle overs with a crafty 23-ball 30, and was looking all settled to go berserk at the death until he was holed out by Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis in the deep. In an attempt to create some room and clear the midwicket boundary, Labuschagne swatted Stars pacer Joel Paris only to find an agile Stoinis towards the region.
Labuschagne’s 30 and Colin Munro’s unbeaten 99 eventually took the Brisbane Heat towards a commendable 214-3 by the end of their 20 overs.
Both Marcus Stoinis and Labuschagne recently took part in Australia’s triumphant run at the 2023 World Cup in India.
The latter of the two will soon be returning to national duties as he has been selected in Australia’s 15-player squad for their forthcoming home Test series against Pakistan. The first of their three Test matches will be commencing at the Perth Stadium on December 14.
