In Sri Lanka's ongoing World Cup match against Pakistan, top-order batter Kusal Mendis emerged as their saviour after they lost an early wicket. Following Kusal Perera's departure, Mendis steadied the Lankan ship, stitching a vital stand with Pathum Nissanka for the second wicket. In this process, the keeper-batter completed his second consecutive fifty in the World Cup with a glorious four off Mohammad Nawaz.

After conceding consecutive singles in the first five deliveries, Pakistani spinner Mohammad Nawaz bowled a fuller ball around the middle and leg stump.

As the ball was right on the slot, Mendis' eyes lit up, as he went for his trademark sweep shot, dispatching the delivery into the mid-wicket fence for four.

He was stranded on 46, so the boundary helped him reach his second half-century in the tournament.

Mendis' batting partner Nissanka also frustrated the Pakistani bowlers, amassing a gorgeous 61-ball 51 before being dismissed by Shadab Khan in the 18th over. After his departure, Sadeera Samarawickrama joined Mendis in the middle to consolidate the Sri Lankan innings.

As of writing, Sri Lanka are 119 for two, with Mendis and Samarawickrama batting on 53* and 9*, respectively.
