Riding on a fighting half-century from Joe Root and useful cameos from lower-order batters, England posted a competitive total of 282 runs in the World Cup opener against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. In response, the BlackCaps got off to a disastrous start, as Sam Curran dismissed Will Young for a golden duck.

Chasing 283, New Zealand got off the mark in style, as Devon Conway hit two glorious boundaries against Chris Woakes in the first over. However, Curran wreaked havoc in the BlackCaps camp, dismissing Young in the very first ball of his spell.

Bowling the second over of the innings, Curran started with a slightly wayward delivery, which swung back into the batter, inviting him for a leg glance.

However, Young ended up edging it behind the stumps. English skipper Jos Buttler did the rest, holding on to a spectacular diving catch and providing his side with a prized scalp.

After Young got out, promising all-rounder Rachin Ravindra joined hands with Conway in the middle. The former took on Curran's bowling partner Chris Woakes, smashing him for two glorious fours in the third over.

As of writing, New Zealand are 19 for one in 3.3 overs, with Conway and Ravindra batting on 11* and 8*, respectively.
