Riding on the valiant efforts from their top-order batters, England got off to a decent start in the World Cup opener against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. After being put into bat, the defending champions got off the mark in style, as Jonny Bairstow hit a glorious six off Trent Boult over square leg. However, the major highlight of the English innings was an audacious shot from Joe Root, who stunned ace Kiwi pacer Trent Boult with an exceptional reverse scoop.

The incident happened in the 12th over when the BlackCaps skipper Tom Latham turned up to Boult to break the budding stand between Root and Bairstow. After bowling two dot balls, Boult pitched it full, inviting Root for a drive. However, the English stalwart decided to break the shackles, as he sent the ball for a huge six over the third man fence through an exceptional reverse scoop.

Regarded as a classical batter, Root recently worked a lot on his stroke play, adding the reverse scoop to his armoury. There were several instances of him getting priceless runs through such a risky shot in Test matches during the English summer.

Regarding the game, England lost Bairstow for a well-composed 35-ball 33 before Harry Brook joined Root in the middle. As of writing, England are 69 for two in 14 overs, with Root and Brook batting on 16* and 4*, respectively.
