Joe Root is one of the best batters in world cricket currently and there are few in the world who are as consistent as he is. In the opening game of the World Cup 2023, against the Kiwis, he once again showed his class and scored a valiant fifty for his side as England kept losing wickets at the other end. However, just when he was looking to cash in, in the last 10 overs, a false shot brought his downfall, putting England in under immense pressure.

How was Joe Root knocked over?

It was the 42nd over of England's innings and Joe Root alongside Sam Curran were looking to take England to a competitive total. They were already six down but Joe Root was looking to get a move on. Glenn Phillips bowled a fullish delivery on middle and leg and Root tried to play a fancy reverse-sweep. However, he failed to connect it and his leg stump got uprooted, much to the disappointment of English fans all over the world. Root departed on 77 off 86 balls and England needed their star batter to get a big hundred in this curtain raiser of World Cup 2023.

At the time of writing, England are 250-8 in the 45th over with Sam Curran and Adil Rashid at the crease. The Kiwis have bowled well but England have played some rash shots and have themselves to blame for their poor position in the World Cup opener.
