Jonny Bairstow's hilarious save [Source: @SA20_League, @FoxCricket/X.com]
During a recent SA20 game between the SEC and Paarl Royals, Jonny Bairstow comically avoided a run-out chance by ensuring his bat was deep into the crease. This incident brought back the haunting memories of Ashes 2023.
Sunrisers were chasing 151 runs at Gqeberha, with Bairstow and Matthew Breetzke building a partnership after the early loss of Quinton de Kock on 7.
Jonny Bairstow makes a hilarious escape in SA20
Nqobani Mokoena bowled a fiery bouncer, and Jonny Bairstow ducked it past his shoulder to finish with a dot ball. However, on his way to change ends, the wicket-keeper batter was seen dragging his bat deep into the crease before leaving it.
This was to ensure that his crease is marked when the ball was live and the Royals have no room to attempt a run-out. Interestingly, Bairstow’s actions were likely motivated by his past life events.

In Ashes 2023, Jonny Bairstow wandered out of his crease when he thought the ball was dead after ducking a Cameron Green bouncer during the Lord's Test.
In Australia's case, their keeper Alex Carey didn’t hesitate and threw down the stumps straight away and appealed.
The third umpire confirmed the call and declared Jonny Bairstow out, suggesting the ball was still live and he was out of his ground. The moment defined Ashes 2023 and became the most controversial moment of that series.
So it seems Bairstow has learnt his lesson and is not leaving anything to chance in the SA20 2025-26 season.
SEC fall short by 2 runs in dramatic finish
Coming back to the game, Sunrisers Eastern Cape lost the game by 5 wickets by falling just 2 runs short in the 151-run chase.
With nine runs needed off the final over, Ottneil Baartman dismissed Nortje and Gregory to concede just 7 runs and lead Paarl Royals to a stunning last-over thrilling victory.
Nqobani Mokoena played a key role with his four-wicket-haul while Baartman finished with 3 wickets for 36 runs.
