In a significant development, the BCCI and Women’s Premier League (WPL) have launched a new ‘Speed Queen’ initiative, starting from January 5, 2026. The new initiative aims to scout pace talents in the Under-19 and Under-23 categories.
Notably, such talent hunts exist in men’s cricket, but it is for the first time that such an initiative has been launched for women’s cricket. The WPL has uploaded criteria for the budding cricketers on how to register and submit their applications.

Why is WPL bowling hunt a game-changing event for Women’s Cricket?
Women’s cricket is on the rise, and after India’s historic Women’s World Cup win on November 2, the interest and viewership is at an all-time high. At present, the Women in Blue struggle with quality seamers, who can bowl at a challenging pace.
Therefore, franchises will have a keen eye on Speed Queen initiatives, where they can scout talents, groom them, and also rope them for future editions, which will also help Indian cricket. Talking about the WPL, the fourth edition is all set to kickstart from January 9, with the Mumbai Indians set to defend their title.
