In a significant development, Cricket Australia announced Australia's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup on Thursday. While Mitchell Marsh was named the captain, Pat Cummins and Tim David were included in the squad despite recent injury setbacks. However, swashbuckling batter Mitchell Owen was dropped for the mega event, with spin bowling allrounder Cooper Connolly getting a surprise entry in the team.

Pat Cummins, Tim David make it into AUS T20 WC squad despite injuries

Australia's Test captain Pat Cummins recently missed the first two Ashes Tests due to a recurring back injury. Although he made a comeback for the third Test in Adelaide, Cummins was ruled out of the subsequent games, with Cricket Australia deciding to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Despite doubts looming over Cummins' participation, the veteran speedster has found a place in the Australian squad for the T20 World Cup. On a similar note, Tim David, who sustained a grade two hamstring injury, has also been included in the World Cup squad. Having said that, if David doesn't receive fitness clearance, Australia have an opportunity to announce his replacement before January 31.

Mitchell Owen dropped for T20 World Cup due to poor form

Pace bowling allrounder Mitchell Owen has missed out on selection for the T20 World Cup, with Australia preferring Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis for the same role. Owen managed just 38 runs in his last five T20I innings before registering a string of failures in the Big Bash League. Thus, his poor run in the shortest format is the major reason why Owen has been dropped from Australia's T20 World Cup squad.

Australia pick a spin-heavy team for T20 World Cup

Considering they will play all their matches in Sri Lanka, Australia have prioritised spin bowling options for the T20 World Cup. While Adam Zampa and Matthew Kuhnemann have been picked as the frontline spinners, the in-form Cooper Connolly, Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short will play as Australia's spin bowling allrounders in the T20 World Cup.

Despite Mitchell Starc's retirement, Australia haven't picked a left-arm fast bowler for the T20 World Cup. Xavier Bartlett, who has bagged seven wickets in five BBL matches, will spearhead the Australian pace attack with Cummins, Nathan Ellis and Josh Hazlewood.

Australia's batting department will pretty much revolve around their explosive opening duo of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, with Green, Inglis, Maxwell and David playing key roles.
