In a light-hearted video segment shared by ABC Sport, several Australian cricketers were asked to share the first word that comes to mind when they think of England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes. This activity adds to the budding excitement around Ashes 2025.

The clip opens with Australian captain Pat Cummins, who smiles knowingly as soon as Stokes’ photo appears on the screen. Without hesitation, Cummins responds with a single word, “Player.”

It may sound simple, but in cricketing language, calling someone a “player” is one of the biggest compliments.

Another Australian featured in the video chooses the word “Leader.” This reflects Stokes’ enormous influence as England’s Test captain.

Since taking over the role, Ben Stokes has reshaped England’s approach to Test cricket with an aggressive, fearless style.

Under him and coach Brendon McCullum, the team has embraced what fans now call “Bazball” attacking cricket, bold decisions, and unshakeable confidence.

While all Australian players had positive things to say about Stokes, they had funny reactions to Jonny Bairstow. Many recalled the infamous run-out incident from Ashes 2023.

Jonny Bairstow ducked a bouncer from Cameron Green and, thinking the over was done, walked out of his crease to chat with his partner.

But the ball was still live. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey collected it and made a throw to the stumps, catching Bairstow short.

The on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire, who ruled Bairstow out according to the laws of cricket.

Ashes 2025 to begin from November 21

The 2025–26 Ashes series will feature five Test matches in Australia. The first Test begins on 21 November 2025 in Perth, followed by a day-night Test in Brisbane from 4 December.

The third Test will be played in Adelaide from 17 December, before the iconic Boxing Day Test at the MCG from 26 December.

The series concludes with the New Year’s Test in Sydney from 4 January 2026, promising another thrilling Ashes battle.
