Marnus Labuschagne unfurled the innings of the match for Australia thus far at Manchester’s Old Trafford Stadium. The cricketer arrived at the crease at a time when his side lost its first wicket while chasing 275 runs just to wipe out their first-innings deficit.

Having survived a hostile twilight session against English bowlers on Day 3, the batting maverick converted his start to a triple-digit score the following day. The innings marked his 11th Test century, only his second against England and his first of the ongoing Ashes 2023 series.

While Labuschagne overcame an experienced English attack with much comfort, he eventually succumbed to hosts’ part-time spinner Joe Root against the run of play.

After a delayed start on Day 4, Labuschagne resumed his overnight score of 44* in partnership with Mitchell Marsh. After reaching 80* off 153 balls, the right-hander dispatched England’s part-time spinner, Joe Root, for two sixes and a four to race to his century within the next eight deliveries.

Apparently, his brutal assault against Root also turned out to be his undoing a while later. During his attempt to cut the Englishman for a boundary towards deep point, he feathered a faint edge back to hosts wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Root’s breakthrough brought curtains to a threatening Australian partnership, when they were still 64 runs behind England’s first innings lead.

At the time of publishing, Australia reached 214-5 with overnight batter Marsh occupying the crease with newcomer Cameron Green.
