Former captain Jason Holder emerged as West Indies' saviour in the ongoing second Test against South Africa at Providence Stadium in Guyana. Coming at number six, the veteran all-rounder hammered a gutsy half-century, helping the hosts reduce the deficit in the first innings.

Although Holder hit six glorious fours, his monstrous six off Wiaan Mulder grabbed the attention, as it helped him complete a hard-fought half century.

In response to South Africa's first innings total of 160 runs, West Indies had a disastrous start, losing the key wickets of Mikyle Louis, Kraigg Brathwaite, Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge in quick succession.

Joshua Da Silva also couldn't do much, being dismissed for four runs off Wiaan Mulder's bowling.

However, Holder kept his composure, stabilising the Windies' ship amid a serious batting collapse.

After wickets tumbled at one end, the experienced campaigner formed a crucial stand with Shamar Joseph, propelling the home team to 144 before Keshav Maharaj got rid of the latter.

After securing a narrow 16-run lead, South Africa have got a positive start to their second innings.

As of writing, the Proteas were 29 for no loss, with Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram unbeaten in the middle.
