In a significant development, the England and Wales Cricket Board has withdrawn premier fast bowler Gus Atkinson from the much-anticipated final of The Hundred 2024.

Atkinson, anyway, didn't play a single game in the tournament. However, the governing body isn't keen to take any risk on him with the Sri Lanka Tests on the horizon.

Gus Atkinson out of The Hundred 2024 final

Atkinson was a vital member of the Oval Invincibles squad that lifted the title last year. However, he missed the initial games this season owing to the home series against West Indies, where he emerged as the most successful bowler with 22 scalps in three matches.

After joining the Invincibles' setup, Atkinson didn't feature in a single game, with the defending champions sticking to their winning combination.

"Gus has been withdrawn, which is quite understandable. It's disappointing for him but Saqib Mahmood has been phenomenal for us all tournament and showed his class the other night. He'll stay in the side," Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings stated.

As skipper Ben Stokes is set to miss the Sri Lanka series due to a hamstring injury, the English board doesn't want to take any chance on Atkinson, pulling him out of the tournament as a precautionary move.

In another development, Sri Lankan legend Chamari Athapaththu will miss the Invincibles' Eliminator clash against London Spirit in Women's Hundred. Laura Harris has joined the setup as her cover.
