South African maverick Heinrich Klaasen was in tremendous form for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their much-anticipated IPL 2024 league stage encounter against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday (March 27).

The Sunrisers wicketkeeper-batter lit up the night in Hyderabad with a memorable assault versus the five-time champions, producing a jaw-dropping knock of 80* that helped him get the orange cap

While all of Klaasen's maximums provided an exceptional viewing, one would be etched in memories the most and recalled in times to come as it proved to be a record-breaking hit, allowing Sunrisers to post the highest-ever team score in IPL's 17-year-old run.

Klaasen's Record-Breaking Hit For Sunrisers

Ahead of the fourth ball of the 20th over in their barely believable stint with the bat, the Sunrisers were placed levelled with the previous best IPL team total of 263/5 made by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the 2013 season against the now-disbanded Pune Warriors.

On the next ball, Klaasen's magnificent six towards deep mid-wicket region against left-arm spinner Shams Mulani helped them surpass RCB's feat, with the 2016 champions then going on to finish with a remarkable 277/3 in their 20 overs. This is now not just IPL's highest-ever score and also the top score made in the history of domestic T20 cricket.

MI's inexperienced and in-transition bowling attack left much to be desired as Sunrisers rallied on the back of their power-packed batting unit to post an insurmountable score.

While Klaasen's was a headline act of the innings, he would be the first to acknowledge that a pair of thrill-a-minute and record-shattering fifties by Travis Head (62) and Abhishek Sharma (63) provided him an ideal foundation to walk in and give the ball a full monte.

Head's 18-ball fifty initially became the fastest-ever Sunrisers fifty, but the Australian match-winner was beaten to the record within the next 10 minutes when young Abhishek reached the milestone in just 16 deliveries.
