Glenn Phillips scored 90* in vs Central Districts [Source: SonySportsNetwork/X.com]
Having recently returned from a groin injury, which kept him out of action since July, New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips has shown no signs of rustiness as he took the field for Otago against the Central Districts on Tuesday in the Super Smash and scored a Player of the Match, winning 90(48) with 7 fours and four sixes.
Notably, two of his 11 boundaries in total came when he innovated and batted left handed to tackle Jayden Lennox, and his plan worked to perfection to help his team post a formidable first innings total to win the match.
Glenn Phillips bats left-handed
While coming in and batting at number 4, when his team was 47/2, Phillips took the responsibility upon himself to take Otago to a winning total and carried his bat, while wickets kept falling at the other end. In the meantime, when left-hand orthodox spinner Jayden Lennox bowled Phillips at the 19.5 over mark, the explosive batter found his innovative way to take on the spinner.
Instead of switch-hitting or reverse sweeping the bowler, Phillips changed his stance and stood as a left-handed batter to make it easier for himself and also play mind games with the opponents. The ND side were seen making changes to the field, while visibly seeing the funny side of the batter's shenanigans towards the end of the innings.
Bowling from around the wicket, Lennox tried to keep the ball away from the batter's hitting range, pitching it a bit full and outside off, but the Kiwi star batter was smoked for a six over the deep extra cover, and the commentators couldn't hold back their laughter. With his 90*, Otago reached 193/6 in 20 overs and eventually defended the total to win by 41 runs.

Phillips' form central to New Zealand's chances at T20 World Cup
Since his return from the injury, Phillips has played two Plunket Shield games, followed by two Tests vs West Indies ahead of the Super Smash. He notably scored 94 vs Canterbury in the Shield, while picking 9 wickets in four innings ahead of joining the Test squad. He scored 18 and 29 in two innings of the Test series, while picking a wicket each in both matches.
His Super Smash form, where he got 114 runs at a strike rate of 167.64 in two games, is a huge positive for the Blackcaps as they are set tour India in January, followed by the T20 World Cup in February and March. Given his recent form and trade of Sherfane Rutherford from their IPL team, the Gujarat Titans, he is also auditioning for the number 4/5 role in the upcoming season.
