Australian discard and Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner charged himself to an electrifying 99* from just 41 balls against Sydney Thunder in match number 16 of the BBL 2025-26 season. Batting at number five at the Sydney Showground Stadium, Turner clattered eight boundaries and eight huge sixes in his innings to bolt Scorchers to a commanding 202-8 in 20 overs.

Yet to score a century in his 243-match T20 career, Ashton Turner also missed out on his maiden BBL ton by a run, as he was left stranded in the very last over of the innings. Nonetheless, he has now joined a rare club of BBL batters for a rather frustrating record.

Ashton Turner joins Shaun Marsh, Josh Philippe for rare record

Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner became only the fourth batter in BBL history to remain unbeaten on 99. Moreover, he also joined seasoned pro Shaun Marsh as only the second Perth Scorchers player in BBL archives to attain the unwanted feat.

Back in 2011, Marsh scored 99* from 52 balls for the Scorchers against Melbourne Renegades at the Docklands in Melbourne. Here is a look at all four players to remain stranded at 99* in a BBL innings.

Apart from the aforementioned four instances of unbeaten 99s, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis also muscled a 51-ball 99 back in December 2017 for the Melbourne Stars against Brisbane Heat in Brisbane. However, Stoinis was dismissed courtesy of an unfortunate run out in the game.

Nonetheless, Ashton Turner’s 41-ball blitz helped Perth Scorchers mount 202-8 in 20 overs. Aaron Hardie also smeared 28 off just 16 balls to turbo-charge the Scorchers innings at the death.

The innings marked Turner’s 17th T20 half-century, and his 14th in BBL cricket.
