A raging Glenn Maxwell got his furniture clattered by a Lockie Ferguson thunderbolt in the first T20I of the three-match series between Antipodean rivals Australia and New Zealand.

Chasing 216 for a win at Wellington's Sky Stadium, Australia's hard-hitting Marvel clubbed a couple of boundaries and sixes to race to a 10-ball 25* earlier in his innings.

Glenn Maxwell battered New Zealand spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner with two boundaries and twin sixes to blaze Australia past the 100-run mark in just the ninth over of their monumental run-chase.

Aiming to crash Lockie Ferguson's party a while later, the Australian all-rounder was cleaned by the speedster's 144 kph thunderbolt to make his way back to the sheds with an 11-ball 25 to his name.

Following Glenn Maxwell's untimely departure, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh soon notched up his own half-century from just 29 balls to surge his side past the 150-run mark alongside Josh Inglis.

Earlier in the match, New Zealand tallied a colossal 215-run total off the back of a dazzling 68-run knock by Rachin Ravindra. 

Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman provided the finishing touches to the innings with rampant cameos in the death overs.

Glenn Maxwell conceded 32 runs from his two-over spell as he bore the brunt of 'Black Caps' opener Finn Allen's rapid six-laden powerplay assault at the top of the order.
