The art of bowling was on full display on Tuesday during the second ODI of the three-match series between England Women and Sri Lanka Women at Northampton.
Charlotte Dean cunningly sets up Chamari Athapaththu
England's off-spinner, Charlotte Dean displayed her tactical brilliance, setting a trap for Sri Lanka's seasoned batter and captain, Chamari Athapaththu.
Having settled in with a steady 34 runs, Athapaththu seemed set for a big score, only to be outfoxed by Dean's cunning deliveries. In the tenth over, Dean served up a flighted off-break, catching the Sri Lankan skipper off-guard. Though the ball turned only marginally, Athapaththu played a defensive stroke, and the ball made its way to point.
Sensing an opportunity, Dean gave more flight to her subsequent delivery, placing it outside off stump. A gleam in Athapaththu's eyes betrayed her intention to go for a big shot over cover, but she ended up missing it altogether.
However, the vital moment came with Dean's next ball. Adjusting her pace, she delivered a cunning arm ball. The batter, expecting turn, was caught unawares. The ball hurried on to strike Athapaththu's pad, ending her inning prematurely and earning her a plumb lbw.
Coming to the second ENG-W vs SL-W ODI, the day began with England winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Their decision turned fruitful as the hosts have reduced Sri Lanka to 76/4 in 17 overs.
England will aim to restrict the visitors to a modest total, with the goal of chasing it down and securing a series victory, while Sri Lanka will be determined to post a competitive score and level the series.
