Amidst the thrilling Asia Cup 2023 Super Fours match against Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Indian stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli etched their names into record books.

Rohit and Kohli zoom past 5,000 ODI runs in merely 86 innings

With just 2 runs away from an impressive landmark, their partnership was keenly watched by fans across the world. Their arrival at the crease became an immediate focal point of the match. With the early loss of Shubman Gill, the stage was set for Kohli.

It was during the 12th over that Kohli flicked a ball off Dunith Wellalage towards deep mid-wicket. Those two runs did not just add to India’s tally but brought up the combined 5,000 runs for the dynamic Rohit-Kohli duo in ODIs. What made this achievement even more special was the fact that they reached this mark in 86 innings together, making them the fastest pair to do so.

While they are the eighth overall pair to cross this milestone, they are the third Indian duo to achieve it. The iconic pairing of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar remains at the pinnacle with a monumental 8227 runs in 176 innings. Meanwhile, another formidable Indian pair, Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan, have garnered 5193 runs in 117 innings, placing them seventh on this elite list.

Globally, this list witnesses some of cricket's most celebrated partnerships. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara amassed 5992 runs together, while combinations like Tillakaratne Dilshan-Sangakkara (5475), Marvan Atapattu-Sanath Jayasuriya (5462), Adam Gilchrist-Matthew Hayden (5409), and the legendary West Indian duo of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes (5206) fill the record books.

Coming to the game in Colombo, after electing to bat first, India had a good beginning. However, the departure of Gill, Kohli and Rohit in quick successions has caused a panic in the Indian dressing room.

At the moment, Ishan Kishan and the centurion from the last match, KL Rahul have a tough repair job ahead of them.
