The atmosphere at the R. Premadasa Cricket Stadium was electric as Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma delivered a splendid performance, marking another significant milestone in his illustrious ODI career.

Playing against Sri Lanka, Rohit achieved the landmark of 10,000 ODI runs with a stunning six off Kasun Rajitha, making him the sixth Indian and the 15th overall to attain this impressive record.

However, the spotlight isn't just on Rohit’s 10,000 ODI runs. The Hitman has etched his name even deeper into cricket history by crossing 8,000 runs in ODIs as an opener. He is now the third Indian, following in the footsteps of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar with 15,310 runs and former captain Sourav Ganguly, who racked up 9,146 runs, to achieve this.

The journey hasn’t always been smooth for Rohit. His pivotal shift in the ODI batting lineup in 2013, courtesy of then-captain MS Dhoni, proved to be a turning point. The veteran batter, who had a fluctuating start to his international career, found his rhythm and consistency upon being promoted as an opener.

The numbers post that shift in 2013 are proof of this transformation, with Rohit scoring at an impressive average of over 55 - the highest among openers with a minimum of 3,000 runs in ODIs.

While Virat Kohli remains the fastest to reach the 10,000-run landmark in just 205 ODI innings, Rohit, taking just 241 innings, stands proudly as the second quickest, leaving behind many cricketing giants in the process.

As for the ongoing match, the Indian team started robustly with Rohit and Shubman Gill putting up a promising 80-run opening stand. However, Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage threatened to halt the momentum, taking out Gill, Kohli, and Rohit in a quick succession.

With the scoreboard reading 128/3 after 25 overs, the current situation sees Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul at the crease, looking to anchor the innings and guide the Indian team to a substantial total.
