Sri Lankan spinners Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka worked in tandem to dust out a star-studded Indian batting line-up for just 213 in their Asia Cup 2023 bout. Wellalage, a 20-year-old accounted for five of India’s top six batters, including Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and captain Rohit Sharma.

Meanwhile, Asalanka handled the remaining Indian players sans Axar Patel, who was dismissed by enigma machine Maheesh Theekshana.

As it turns out, the visitors’ lacklustre performance with the bat in Colombo now marks the first-ever instance of an Indian batting line-up losing all its 10 wickets at the hands of spinners in an ODI game.

Wellalage, Asalanka, Theekshana gang up on India

Sri Lankan spin trio Dunith Wellalage, Charith Asalanka and Maheesh Theekshana accounted for all 10 Indian wickets in their latest Asia Cup 2023 affair. The three cricketers now hold the record of being the only set of spin bowlers to have dismantled an entire Indian batting line-up in an ODI.

Team India batters are usually considered as the masters of spin, considering their upbringing on turning Indian pitches back home. Their latest batting debacle came as a shock to many, as they have never lost all their 10 wickets to spinners in an ODI in their long and illustrious journey in the format.

Meanwhile, from Sri Lanka’s point of view, their latest achievement is now only the second instance from the island nation to dismiss all 10 opponents via spin in an ODI, and the first in more than 22 years.

Previously, Sri Lankan spinners had bagged all 10 wickets at the same venue during a match against Zimbabwe back in 2001.
